The school usually gives its own list — cross-check it, especially for notebooks and workbooks.

Getting a child ready for school in Estonia means a backpack, stationery, indoor shoes, a PE kit — and a dozen small things that surface on August 31st. The list above is the universal base: tick off what you have bought, the checkmarks stay in your browser. Schools hand out their own list (nimekiri) with specific notebooks and workbooks — ours doesn’t replace it, it catches what slips through.

What it costs

By our price monitoring across 20+ Estonian shops (early August 2026), the budget first-grader basket is about €88 — the cheapest suitable item for each position. The typical basket is about €210. Knowing where to look saves a family over a hundred euros in September alone; our channel Leo Catches Deals hunts school-supply discounts daily. Also check the first-grader allowance (ranitsatoetus) — Tallinn pays €500.

FAQ

What school item is legally required in Estonia?

A reflector (helkur): pedestrians must wear one in the dark under Estonian traffic law. Put one on the backpack and one on the jacket.

When are school supplies cheapest?

“Tagasi kooli” campaigns start in late July and bottom out in the last week of August — but by then popular backpacks and shoe sizes are gone. Buy the backpack and shoes early, consumables in the late-August sales.

How do I size a school backpack?

The top should sit at shoulder level, the bottom no lower than the lower back, and the straps snug so it hugs the back. Never “to grow into”. Our size calculator also tells you the PE kit size.
