Pick in the shop
The hospital bag is packed in advance and then simply waits by the door. The list above covers mum and baby, based on Estonian maternity hospitals: tick off what is already packed. What hospitals provide on site (swaddles, first nappies, pads) differs — check your hospital’s own list on its website.
When to pack
A sensible deadline is week 36: from then on the bag stands ready and any turn of events stops being a logistics problem. Count your week with our due date calculator. Keep the documents (ID card, maternity card) in the bag you always carry, not the hospital one.
FAQ
What does the hospital provide?
Estonian maternity wards usually have swaddles, often first nappies and postpartum pads for the first days. The set varies between hospitals and changes over time — the only reliable source is your hospital’s list. Ours is built to cover the worst case.
What can you truly not do without?
Documents, a phone with a long charging cable, washable slippers, water. Everything else can be brought later or bought — these four are needed within the first hour.
What is needed for going home?
Weather-appropriate clothes for the baby, a wrap or blanket, and an infant car seat already installed in the car — practise installing it beforehand, not in the hospital car park.
